Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. Hofstra University receives a “D” grade for Required Equity, Diversity, or Inclusion Courses for Students. The <a href="https://www.hofstra.edu/liberal-arts-sciences/distribution-courses.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university</a> requires students to take one course from a Cross-Cultural category. Within this category, biased course options include:

In addition, many of the course options that may seem unbiased have biased course descriptions. For example, the course &#8220;Food and Culture&#8221; says, &#8220;This course considers food from an anthropological perspective, paying particular attention to the story that food tells about interactions between cultures, power relations, the politics of hunger, the cultural construction of gender, class inequalities, and ethnic communities. Topics include the commodification of food, food avoidance cross-culturally, and the ways that food conveys meaning.&#8221;
This makes bypassing biased courses more difficult.

According to a message from the <a href="https://news.hofstra.edu/2023/03/27/president-susan-poser-update-to-hofstras-covid-19-vaccination-policy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university</a> president, Hofstra University dropped its COVID-19 vaccination requirement on March 27, 2023. The university says, &#8220;Although we strongly encourage all members of our community to stay up to date on vaccines, COVID-19 numbers remain low, with health experts predicting a continued decline.&#8221;

According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Hempstead, New York violent crime rate was 574.39 per 100,000 people in 2018, higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

Hofstra University receives a “C” grade for Required Western Civilization Courses for Students. While the <a href="https://www.hofstra.edu/liberal-arts-sciences/distribution-courses.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university</a> does not have a required Western Civilization course or category of courses, students must complete nine credits from the Literature category. Within this category, students can take Western Civilization courses such as:

<li>&#8220;The Golden Age of Athens&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;Western Literature&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;Medieval Literature&#8221;</li>

Students must also complete three credits from a History, Philosophy, Religion category. Within this category, students can choose Western Civilization courses such as &#8220;Medieval Europe&#8221; or &#8220;The Bible: Ancient and Modern Perspectives.&#8221;
However, these Western Civilization courses are not required and can be bypassed in favor of courses unrelated to Western Civilization.
