Stony Brook University receives a “C” grade for having a Bias Reporting System but not a Bias Response Team. Bias Reporting Systems and Response Teams are systems or teams of faculty, staff, and sometimes law enforcement.
According to <a href="https://speechfirst.org/bias-reporting-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpeechFirst</a>, students are “encouraged to report ‘bias incidents’ to these boards (or teams) in the name of inclusion and tolerance, but it’s often unclear what the school considers ‘bias’ in the first place. Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.”

Stony Brook University receives a “D+” grade for the Ratio of Right-Leaning Clubs to Left-Leaning Clubs. Out of a list of 20 clubs (10 from each side), <a href="https://stonybrook.campuslabs.com/engage/organizations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the university</a> has one right-leaning club compared to four left-leaning clubs. Seawolves for Israel is the one right-leaning club. College Socialists, Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance, Planned Parenthood Generation Action at Stony Brook University, and the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance are the four left-leaning clubs.

Denied Turning Point USA Chapter

Stony Brook University receives a “D” grade for In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants. The <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/finaid/undocumented_students/index.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university</a> says &#8220;In some cases, undocumented students, or specifically DACA students, are eligible to receive in-state tuition. Students who attended a New York State high school for at least two years and graduated are <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/bursar/residency/how-to-apply.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eligible</a> to submit the Express Application for New York State Residency.
The university adds:
&#8220;Students without lawful immigration status who have graduated from high school in New York should also submit the express application. Such students should also complete the &#8220;Affidavit of Intent&#8221; that is included as part of that application.&#8221;

In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants

Stony Brook University receives a “B+” grade for the Amount of Foreign Funding Received. According to <a href="https://sites.ed.gov/foreigngifts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">College Foreign Gift Reporting</a>, the total amount of foreign funding the university has received is $506 per current undergraduate student. Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. The figure above only takes into account reported foreign funding.

Stony Brook University receives a “C” grade for Required Equity, Diversity, or Inclusion Courses for Students. The <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/bulletin/current/policiesandregulations/degree_requirements/categoriesandlearningoutcomes.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university</a> requires students to &#8220;demonstrate versatility by showing proficiency in each of eleven fundamental learning objectives.&#8221;
Some <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/bulletin/current/search/index.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">courses</a> within these eleven categories do have a left-leaning bias, including but not limited to: &#8220;Topics in Global Feminism,&#8221; &#8220;Social Sciences Topics in Women&#8217;s and Gender Studies,&#8221; and &#8220;Introduction to Queer Studies in Humanities.&#8221;
While these courses exist, they can be bypassed.

Joseph M. Pierce is an <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/hispanic/people/pierce.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associate Professor in the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature</a> at Stony Brook University. His research interests are centered on the intersections of kinship, gender, sexuality, and race in Latin America, queer studies, and Indigenous studies. 
Pierce teaches courses such as “Flesh, Bodies, and Consumption,” “Thirst: Sex and Being,” and “Queer Latina/x Feminisms.” In the course, “Monsters, Cannibalism, and Cyborgs,” Pierce leads discussions on “how monstrosity intersections with the development of national identity, gendered bodies, sexual practices, race, and humanness from the colonial period to today.”

In an essay titled <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/hispanic/people/Pierce%20-%20Adopted%20Trace-Blood-and%20Native%20Authenticity.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trace, Blood, and Native Authencity,</a> Pierce critiques Native American history and speech stating, 
“My goal is to question the limits of self-identification when that very language, that narration, seems to challenge Native practices of cultural ballooning and tribal citizenship…My central claim in this essay is that when taken in isolation genealogical trace, racialized blood, and cultural authenticity all fail to account for the complex ways in which relating as Native — particularly for children adopted out — is predicated on the intersection of all three.”
In his blog, <a href="https://www.josephmpierce.com/post/black-lives-matter-and-indigenous-solidarity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Black Lives Matter and Indigenous Solidarity</a>, Pierce identifies himself as a “citizen of the Cherokee Nation” and discusses the history of Native and Black Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries. He claims,
“In 1866, CherokeeNation signed a treaty with the US government that granted the Black people it had enslaved ‘all the rights of native Cherokees.’ These people became known as Freedmen. Since then, the Cherokee Nation has consistently sought to refuse or limit the rights of Freedmen and their ancestors.”
He further declares,
“White supremacy is not a theory. It names the material realities that have emerged as the compounding effects of colonization, genocide, and slavery. White supremacy is both a built environment and an epistemological project that has imbued every aspect of Western culture in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and elsewhere, as the expansion of Europe’s colonial tentacles reached across the globe beginning in the 15th Century.”

<a href="https://socialwelfare.stonybrookmedicine.edu/faculty-staff/hayward" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anna Hayward, Ph.D.</a>, is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University. Her research interests and publications include “children and families affected by incarceration, environmental justice and global environmental health.” 
Between 2011-2015, the Department of Health &amp; Human Services awarded Hayward $2.87 million in grant funds through a project known as the Suffolk County Fatherhood Initiative: Implementations &amp; Impact Evaluation. The <a href="https://www.acf.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/documents/ofa/Retreat_Inc_Descriptive_Report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2020 Final Descriptive Evaluation</a> says the program “provides responsible fatherhood, healthy relationships, and economic stability services for low-income fathers residing in Suffolk and Nassau counties in Long Island, New York.”
Hayward made national headlines on January 3, 2023, when she branded Suffolk County police officers “murderers.” Her comments were in response to Stony Book Medical&#8217;s announcement that two officers were in critical condition after sustaining stab wounds. The <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/01/02/stony-brook-prof-anna-hayward-blames-stabbed-cops-for-murder-of-their-attacker/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a> said the officers “had responded to a call that the suspect was threatening his roommate with a fire extinguisher…when one of the men turned a knife on the officers.”
Hayward’s initial post and Twitter account have since been deleted.

In a statement to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/01/02/stony-brook-prof-anna-hayward-blames-stabbed-cops-for-murder-of-their-attacker/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>, Suffolk County Police Benevolent Associate Lou Civello said,

<a href="https://socialwelfare.stonybrookmedicine.edu/faculty-staff/hayward" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anna Hayward, Ph.D.</a>, is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University. Her research interests and publications include “children and families affected by incarceration, environmental justice and global environmental health.” 

Between 2011-2015, the Department of Health &amp; Human Services awarded Hayward $2.87 million in grant funds through a project known as the Suffolk County Fatherhood Initiative: Implementations &amp; Impact Evaluation. The <a href="https://www.acf.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/documents/ofa/Retreat_Inc_Descriptive_Report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2020 Final Descriptive Evaluation</a> says the program “provides responsible fatherhood, healthy relationships, and economic stability services for low-income fathers residing in Suffolk and Nassau counties in Long Island, New York.”

Hayward made national headlines on January 3, 2023, when she branded Suffolk County police officers “murderers.” Her comments were in response to Stony Book Medical's announcement that two officers were in critical condition after sustaining stab wounds. The <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/01/02/stony-brook-prof-anna-hayward-blames-stabbed-cops-for-murder-of-their-attacker/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a> said the officers “had responded to a call that the suspect was threatening his roommate with a fire extinguisher…when one of the men turned a knife on the officers.”

Hayward’s initial post and Twitter account have since been deleted.

On January 4, Stony Brook University published the following message in response to public outrage over Hayward’s posts:

In a statement to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/01/02/stony-brook-prof-anna-hayward-blames-stabbed-cops-for-murder-of-their-attacker/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>, Suffolk County Police Benevolent Associate Lou Civello said,

“‘While a Suffolk County Police Officer fights for his life after being stabbed in the neck an anti-police professor slanderously referred to him and his partner as murderers.”

He continued

“Stony Brook University Professor Dr. Anna Hayward displayed a stunning level of ignorance when she callously commented on Stony Brook’s official page denouncing the police and condemning the actions of these hero cops who stopped an armed criminal and saved others from harm.”
