All employees are <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://oeo.tufts.edu/training/for-employees/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">required</a> to complete Mandatory Training on Discrimination and Harassment Prevention. However, the <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://engineering.tufts.edu/deij/resources/faculty-and-staff-resources/training-modules" target="_blank" rel="noopener">School</a> of Engineering also requires that staff take mandatory anti-racist training:
&#8220;The mandatory DEIJ Education Modules are part of a comprehensive portfolio of educational opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to engage in intentional, reflective, and meaningful learning and development of anti-racist and anti-oppressive praxis in their individual development, the content of their work (particularly those with decision-making power to address policies and practices), and their relationships with others on campus.&#8221;
Tufts had previously declared itself an Anti-Racist <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://president.tufts.edu/wp-content/uploads/EXECUTIVE-SUMMARY_FINAL.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Institution</a> in 2021:
&#8220;The university has supported multiple awareness and education campaigns and events and recently has approved a university-wide anti-racism and anti-oppression training and education program. Tufts University receives an “F” grade for having a Bias Response Team. Bias Reporting Systems and Response Teams are systems or teams of faculty, staff, and sometimes law enforcement.
According to <a href="https://speechfirst.org/bias-reporting-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpeechFirst</a>, students are “encouraged to report ‘bias incidents’ to these boards (or teams) in the name of inclusion and tolerance, but it’s often unclear what the school considers ‘bias’ in the first place. Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.”

Tufts University receives a “F” grade for the Amount of Foreign Funding Received. According to <a href="https://sites.ed.gov/foreigngifts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">College Foreign Gift Reporting</a>, the total amount of foreign funding the university has received is $23,454.55 per current undergraduate student. Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://students.tufts.edu/registrar/forms-and-policies/bulletin/bulletin-college-liberal-arts-babs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Students</a> within the School of Arts and Sciences are required to <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://tufts.app.box.com/v/sl-summary-requirements" target="_blank" rel="noopener">complete</a> courses from the following categories: Writing, Foreign Language, World Civilizations, Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Mathematical Sciences. It appears that students can choose any course that fits those descriptions. Students within the School of Engineering are required to complete courses from the following categories: Engineering or Computing, Mathematics or Natural Sciences, Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, English, Engineering, and Computer Science. No categories appear to be biased.
However, all <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://engineering.tufts.edu/deij/resources/faculty-and-staff-resources/training-modules" target="_blank" rel="noopener">students</a> within the School of Engineering must complete Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Education Modules.

Tufts University receives a “C” grade for Boycotting, Divesting, and Sanctioning Israel (BDS). According to the <a href="https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/campus-divestment-resolutions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jewish Virtual Library</a>, since the start of the 2013-14 school year, the university’s student body has introduced one piece of legislation that would require the university to divest from any Israeli company and from companies that do business with Israel. That piece of legislation failed.
Although that piece of legislation failed, introducing this type of legislation often puts a target on Jewish and pro-Israel students and communities, fostering an environment vulnerable to antisemitism.

Boycotting, Divesting, and Sanctioning Israel

Tufts University receives a “C” grade for Mask and Vaccine Mandates. The university&#8217;s <a href="https://healthy.tufts.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vaccine policy</a> says, &#8220;Tufts strongly encourages all community members to stay up-to-date on vaccination boosters.&#8221;
Their <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://healthy.tufts.edu/public-health/covid-19" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mask</a> states, &#8220;Tufts suggests wearing KN95 masks indoors as an effective strategy to prevent transmission of respiratory illness, including COVID-19.&#8221;

Across the United States, students who graduate with STEM degrees tend to earn more on average than their other student counterparts.

Tufts University receives an “A-” grade for Crime Rates in University City or Town. According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Medford, Massachusetts violent crime rate was 125.87 per 100,000 people in 2018, lower than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

Abowd frequently refers to Israel as a colonial state, in which European Jews stole the land from the Arabs who were living in what is now Israel and launched a campaign of ethnic cleansing that continues to this day. In a 2016 speech at the <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?418402-3/palestine-center-conference-panel-2">Jerusalem Fund’s Annual Conference</a>, Abowd repeated this claim, alleging that Israel’s capital Jerusalem is being actively purged of the Arabs that live in the city.

With his prior statements and actions in mind, many in the <a href="https://www.campusreform.org/?ID=13577">Tuft’s community were alarmed</a> when Abowd began offering a course titled “Colonizing Palestine.”  According to the <a href="https://as.tufts.edu/colonialismstudies/documents/coursesFall2019.pdf">course description</a>, students will examine Palestine and Israel through the “lens of colonialism studies” and answer important questions regarding issues like “gender and sexuality.”

Professor Kareem Khubchandan is an <a href="https://as.tufts.edu/wgss/people/faculty/kareem-khubchandani" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associate Professor in Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences</a> department. He specializes in Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, as well as Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora. Khubchandan has written multiple books, journal essays, and encyclopedia entries mostly promoting the history of drag and queer performances in South Asia.
Khubchandan also performs on college campuses under a persona named LaWhore Vagistan. According to <a href="https://www.campusreform.org/article?id=18353" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Campus Reform,</a> “The Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics [hosted the] Tufts professor under his drag alter ego at a meeting for the Politics of Race &amp; Ethnicity program.” Students and faculty were invited via email which included an advertisement of Khubchandan posing in a library.
Additionally, in 2019, <a href="https://www.campusreform.org/article?id=13808" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Campus Reform said</a> Khubchandan &#8220;lectur[ed] in drag at various universities in order to teach students about ‘queer nightlife’ and to bring ‘the nightclub to the classroom.” His performance themes continue to range from queer feminism to globalization to Islamophobia.
Khubchandan refers to himself as an “aunty” to his students and mentees on campus. He also teaches Critical Aunty Studies, which is part of Tufts’ Mellon Bridge program. In an <a href="https://www.criticalauntystudies.com/01-welcome" target="_blank" rel="noopener">online introduction to the aunty symposium</a>, he discussed the “mutual nature of aunty work across all generations [which includes] aging as a transgender person, fashion, drag, and body size.”

Additionally, in 2019, <a href="https://www.campusreform.org/article?id=13808" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Campus Reform said</a> Khubchandan "lectur[ed] in drag at various universities in order to teach students about ‘queer nightlife’ and to bring ‘the nightclub to the classroom.” His performance themes continue to range from queer feminism to globalization to Islamophobia.

Khubchandan refers to himself as an “aunty” to his students and mentees on campus. He also teaches Critical Aunty Studies, which is part of Tufts’ Mellon Bridge program. In an <a href="https://www.criticalauntystudies.com/01-welcome" target="_blank" rel="noopener">online introduction to the aunty symposium</a>, he discussed the “mutual nature of aunty work across all generations [which includes] aging as a transgender person, fashion, drag, and body size.”

<a href="https://as.tufts.edu/art-architecture/people/faculty/kelli-morgan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kelli Morgan</a> is a Professor of the Practice in both Curatorial Studies and the History of Art and Architecture at Tufts University. She’s also the Director of Curatorial Studies. Her research interests include African-American visual culture, visual literacy, and anti-racist approaches to museum curative practice.
Morgan received her appointment as Professor of the Practice in September 2022. In November, Morgan <a href="https://tuftsdaily.com/news/2022/11/07/professor-kelli-morgan-founds-anti-racist-curatorial-practice-in-effort-to-diversify-museums/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appeared in an article</a> from The Tufts Daily titled “Professor Kelli Morgan founds Anti-Racist Curatorial Practice in effort to diversify museums.”

She also serves as the Director of Museum Studies and a faculty member for the <a href="https://asegrad.tufts.edu/program/anti-racist-curatorial-practice-certificate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anti-Racist Curatorial Practice program</a> — a certification program that trains students in “effective methods of divesting traditional museum practices that are rooted in white colonialist and imperialist histories.”
In March 2022, Robinson took her class to an exhibit through the Tufts University Art Galleries. According to an article titled “<a href="https://now.tufts.edu/2022/03/01/hacking-diversity-and-representation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hacking for Diversity and Representation</a>,” Tufts Now said it was the Galleries&#8217; first “Art Datathon to examine how gender, race, and artistic mediums are represented in the university’s collection.”
The presentation was inspired by the director and chief curator for Tufts Galleries who conducted a public audit of campus art by “white males.” Tufts Now reported, “From that analysis (conducted as part of the Tufts as an Anti-Racist Institution initiative)&#8230;the Public Art working group concluded that while the university’s imagery wasn’t overtly racist, it was exclusionary because it did not include any people of color.”

The statement goes on to say:
“Islamophobic, genocidal, anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian rhetoric are all rooted in the languages we use. It is our responsibility to lay bare how language has been used to obscure and preserve the ongoing settler colonial project outside Gaza…”
The signatories&#8217; list of political declarations includes:

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">“The resistance is an ongoing response to a long history of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians” and </li>

</ul>
