Weber State University is based in the suburbs of Ogden, Utah with 60 buildings, and multiple academic spaces across 562 acres. Weber State University was founded as Weber Stake Academy in 1889 by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. According to the college&#8217;s <a href="https://www.intermountainhistories.org/items/show/663" target="_blank" rel="noopener">historical website</a>, &#8220;The academy offered elementary and high school classes with a focus on training future teachers. In 1890, Weber Stake Academy moved to the Ogden Tabernacle to accommodate a growing number of students, but this was short-lived for fear the government might confiscate the building if it was used for nonreligious purposes.&#8221;
According to <a href="https://www.weber.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the university&#8217;s</a> official website, the academy converted into a state junior college in 1933 and the name changed to Weber State University in 1991. The university has two fraternities, three sororities, and is within driving distance of museums and outdoor adventure parks.

According to his university profile, Mr. Wash is the only two-time, National Debate Tournament and Cross-Examination Debate Association Champion, both as a player and coach. Mr. Wash additionally facilitates workshops in “social justice, deliberative democracy, and debate” on behalf of the university. During one such retreat during the 2019 Fall semester, Walsh was accused of being “racist” and “anti-white” by a student in attendance, Michael Moreno.
In audio captured by Moreno, Mr. Wash accuses white people of fabricating the existence of space and facilitates a conversation where students discuss forcibly launching all white people into space.

The event in question took place during an “<a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/university-investigating-black-debate-instructor-who-argued-space-isnt-real-created-by-whites/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">optional, pre-season retreat for students</a>”, according to the university.
According to Moreno, attendees were supposed to be debating the topic, “Should the US government work with Russia and China to reach space?” Instead of coaching students during the exercise, Mr. Wash launched into a racially tinged tirade, alleging that space is not real. He further characterizes concepts like “science and technology” as merely the projection of “white fantasies;” since neither he nor anyone else in the room has been to space, it can’t be real.
“Our argument will be that space is not real. It’s not real. Science, technology, it’s all fake. It’s a projection of white fantasies that has worked to control our interpretation of how the world works….None of us have had the privilege of going to space to verify that there’s these stars and these galaxies and these planets.” 
In the published video, Moreno can then be heard pointing out the absurdity of the argument, citing the existence of black astronauts. This is quickly dismissed, as Mr. Wash alleges that black people collaborate with whiteness, in this case, to lie about the existence of outer space.
Mr. Wash would later claim the purpose of the exercise is for the <a href="https://kutv.com/news/local/weber-state-debate-under-microscope-after-secret-recordings-go-viral" target="_blank" rel="noopener">instructor to adopt purposefully extreme positions to test students’ ability to debate and formulate arguments</a>. The remainder of the audio, however, demonstrates that Mr. Wash aligned with other students against Moreno, rather than challenging their arguments.
Around the 12 minute mark, the exercise escalated as several students began suggesting that all white people be removed from the earth. One student is heard advocating for launching all white people into space in order to create a safer planet for black people. Instead of dissecting the argument as directed, others soon chimed in to ask if doing so would only allow white people to colonize other worlds and enslave other forms of life.
Rather than point out the absurdity of their argument, Mr. Wash states that it&#8217;s more of a matter of practicality of getting white people into space.
Attempting to challenge both arguments, Moreno is rebuffed by other students, who claim he cannot ask questions to black students’ questions as a white man. Mr. Wash would further imply that Moreno’s objections were on par with that of sexual assault.
“So you being like if they’re women debaters and they’re like “this is what space means” and you’re like “no actually space means this way” – this is like a form of linguistic violence. I’m not going to go so far as to say the “R” word in there [implying “rape”], but it’s a form of linguistic assault.” 
Prior to the release of the video, Moreno reported the incident to Mr. Wash’s department supervisors. Following scrutiny by the media, the university vowed to look into the incident, but still sided with Mr. Wash,<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20191105161610/https://www.theepochtimes.com/college-debate-professor-science-is-a-projection-of-white-fantasies_3137028.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> stating that his views are protected under academic freedom</a>.
“At the heart of this complex debate are three fundamental values: American higher education’s unwavering commitment to academic freedom, an individual’s right to freedom of expression, and Weber State’s dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.”
As of November 2021, Mr. Wash is still teaching at the university. <a href="https://deadline.com/2017/08/debate-champion-ryan-wash-plan-b-annapurna-macro-daniel-barnz-movie-deal-1202140093/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">He will also be the subject of an upcoming, Brad Pitt-financed movie about his life</a>, of which Mr. Wash will serve as executive producer.
