Yale University is a private university in New Haven, Connecticut with an undergraduate enrollment size of 6,536. The university is located in a city about two-and-a-half hours from Boston and one-and-a-half hours north of New York City. It has numerous opportunities for students to be involved in Greek life or student organizations. Students at Yale University can enjoy many tourist attractions, parks, museums, and restaurants. Their official mascot is Handsome Dan the bulldog. Members of the Yale University community are referred to as “Bulldogs.”
Yale University offers 80 majors and 2,000 courses. Notable former students include U.S. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh, film director Oliver Stone, and neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Yale University receives a “C” grade by What Will They Learn? which takes into account the university’s educational prowess. Factors include composition, literature, foreign language, U.S. government or history, economics, mathematics, and natural science.
Yale University receives an “A+” grade for the Average Salary of Recent Graduates. As of 2021, alumni with 0-5 years of experience after graduating from Yale University with a bachelor’s degree make $78,000 on average according to Payscale.
Yale University receives an “A+” grade for the Average Salary of Graduates Mid-Career. As of 2021, alumni with 10+ years of experience after graduating from Yale University with a bachelor’s degree make $151,600 on average according to Payscale.
Yale University receives an “A+” grade for the Percent of Graduates with Debt (Federal and Private). In 2020, 14% of graduates accumulated student debt from federal and/or private sources according to The Institute for College Access & Success.
Yale University receives an “A-” grade for the Average Debt of Graduates (Federal and Private). In 2020, graduates accumulated $14,884 of debt on average from federal and/or private sources according to The Institute for College Access & Success.
Yale University receives a “B” grade for Mandated Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Training for Staff. The university requires employees to complete Title IX training in compliance with state law. The university also encourages staff to participate in affinity groups. However, the Professional Development courses offered don’t appear to have any bias.
Yale University receives a “C” grade for having a Bias Reporting System but not a Bias Response Team. Bias Reporting Systems and Response Teams are systems or teams of faculty, staff, and sometimes law enforcement.
According to SpeechFirst, students are “encouraged to report ‘bias incidents’ to these boards (or teams) in the name of inclusion and tolerance, but it’s often unclear what the school considers ‘bias’ in the first place. Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.”
Yale University receives a “C” grade for the Ratio of Right-Leaning Clubs to Left-Leaning Clubs. Out of a list of 20 clubs (10 from each side), the university has two right-leaning clubs compared to five left-leaning clubs. Yale Federalist Society and The Conservative Party are the two right-leaning clubs. Young Democratic Socialists of America, J-Street U, DivOut, Reproductive Equity Health, and Broad Recognition are the five left-leaning clubs.
Yale University receives a “C” grade for not having an active Turning Point USA chapter. The university has not denied a Turning Point USA chapter on campus. Unfortunately, universities and Student Governments around the country often use their power to prevent certain clubs from operating on campus.
Yale University receives an “F” grade for the Amount of Foreign Funding Received. According to College Foreign Gift Reporting, the total amount of foreign funding the university has received is $180,950.04 per current undergraduate student. Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been reports that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. The figure above only takes into account reported foreign funding.
Yale University receives a “C” grade for Required Equity, Diversity, or Inclusion Courses for Students. The university does not appear to require any equity, diversity, or inclusion courses for students. However, the university’s Liberal Arts Education page states:
“There are no specific classes you must take at Yale, but you are required to learn broadly and deeply. Depth is covered in your major. Breadth is covered in three study areas (the humanities and arts, the sciences, and the social sciences) and three skill areas (writing, quantitative reasoning, and foreign language). A Yale education instills in students the values, goals, skills, and knowledge they need to pursue inspiring work, to take joy in lifelong learning, and to lead successful and meaningful lives.”
While the university does offer courses such as “Identity, Diversity, and Policy in U.S. Education” and “Anti-Racist Curriculum and Pedagogy,” these courses can be bypassed.
Yale University receives a “B” grade for Segregated Dormitories, Graduations, and Classes. The university has two segregated commencement ceremonies (Black Graduation and Lavender Graduation).
The university does not appear to segregate any living-learning communities or classes by race, ethnicity, or gender.
Yale University receives a “B” grade for Protests and Canceling Speakers. Since 2021, there has been one incident. During a bipartisan event on free speech, 120 leftists repeatedly interrupted and insulted a representative from Alliance Defending Freedom. One student told a panelist that she would “literally fight you, b****.” Nearby classes were canceled and the panelists had to be escorted out by police.
Yale University receives a “C” grade for Mask and Vaccine Mandates. According to the university’s COVID-19 Information page:
“Effective May 15, faculty, staff, students, postdoctoral/postgraduate trainees, and visitors are strongly encouraged but not required to remain up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations. Vaccinations continue to be required for healthcare workers and faculty, staff, and students working in settings where patient care is provided.”
Yale University receives a “B-” grade for the Percent of Students Graduating with STEM Degrees. According to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Center (IPEDS), as of 2020, 9.62% of the current undergraduate student population graduate with a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) degree. Across the United States, students who graduate with STEM degrees tend to earn more on average than their other student counterparts.
Yale University receives a “D+” grade for Crime Rates in University City or Town. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New Haven, Connecticut violent crime rate was 842.35 per 100,000 people in 2018, much higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.
At the beginning of the 2023-24 school year, the Yale Police Union handed out public safety flyers, complete with an image of the Grim Reaper, to students arriving on campus. The flyer shared statistics from the New Haven Police Department, noting: “murders have doubled, burglaries are up 33% and motor vehicle thefts are up 56%.”
The pamphlet stated, “Nevertheless, some Yalies do manage to survive New Haven and even retain their personal property.” The Yale Police Union wished students “good luck” and shared safety tips including “stay off the streets after 8 p.m.,” “do not walk alone,” “avoid public transportation,” and “remain on campus.”
Yale University receives an “F” grade for Required Western Civilization Courses for Students. The university does not require a Western Civilization course or category of courses.
